Wedding photography styles explained

Wedding photography styles fall into three main categories. Reportage wedding photography, traditional wedding photography and contemporary wedding photography. Here is an explanation of the three.

Reportage wedding photography

Also know as photo-journalistic or documentary wedding photography.

This style of photography has become increasingly popular in the recent years. I follow the couple and the guests throughout the day while recording the events of the wedding as they happen in an unobtrusive manner.

I endeavor to tell a story out of the wedding by capturing natural and honest moments rather than setup poses. This method is all about observation, anticipation and spontaneity. I love to capture genuine emotion whilst using my artistic vision and perception. I like to include some formal shots as well.

Traditional wedding photography style

Also known as posed, conventional or classic wedding photography.

Traditional wedding photography was the only style in fashion prior to the development of digital cameras. Conventional wedding photography is dominated by carefully posed shots of groups ranging from the whole wedding party to just the wedding couple themselves.

By concentrating on the key moments and group shots I can work to a set list of photographs. This style involves a great deal of intervention and a significant amount of time spent on the formal setups and organising groups of people. The final images will document the participants, but may not reflect the atmosphere of happiness and the excitement of the wedding day.

Contemporary wedding photography style

Also known as fashion, editorial, illustrative, creative, modern wedding photography.

Contemporary wedding photography is partially inspired by editorial fashion photography. The emphasis is on creating high impact visually interesting images. Although shots are set up, they are less formal. I look for interesting places to use as a backdrop and look to creates strong light effects and unusual angles. The final images are edited to visually enhance colours, contrast and dynamic range.

There isn't always one Wedding Photography Style that's right for everyone, and more often than not, it is good to mix it up and have a bit of variety of each style.
